Plenty to play for on final day of the league season

After an often rain interrupted summer hopefully the low clouds will disperse and we can have one final league Saturday in the sunshine today. Both teams have something to play for.

The 1st XI have been engaged in a four way promotion battle for much of the summer and with 4th placed Cam falling by the wayside the two promoted sides from GCCL Div 2 this season will come from Great Rissington, Thornbury 2s and ourselves. Thornbury go in to the final round of fixtures with a 9 point lead ahead of Great Rissington and a further 9 points back to us in 3rd - but with a maximum possible 24 points available everything is still to play for today as the 1st XI host the leaders Thornbury in a must-win finale to the season. A win on its own may not be enough without some help from Cheltenham 2s, who travel to Great Rissington, but we can only focus on looking after ourselves.

The 2nd XI travel to Huntley in 4th place in CGF Div 1 West having been afflicted by mid-season availability issues but remaining in a 3 way battle for 2nd place. That wouldn't normally be enough for promotion, and nothng official has been stated to the contrary, but a persistant rumour that two promotion slots are available means that we need to do everything we can to try and secure 2nd spot. A win and some help from our neighbours Corse & Staunton in their fixture with Penallt would be enough for Ollie's team but regardless of the outcome today it has been a really positive season of progress in the 2nd team.

In addition we are pleased to be welcoming all of our sponsors to Playley Green this afternoon - we are incredibly grateful to everyone who has sponsored Match Balls through the course of the season and our shirt sponsors Slatter Electrical, Nicholls Demolition and principal sponsor Frontload. Hopefully we can show you our gratitude this afternoon with a fine performance on the field and a warm welcome off it.

The league season will wrap up tonight with end of season fines and a barbeque for all players and supporters of the teams. More formal end of season presentations will follow in the next couple of weeks.
