Rich Allen
Left Handed Batsman /
Right Arm Medium Bowler
Nickname: Dickie
One of the
“Experienced” cricketers at the club. Excellent bowler to have in the side and can always produce a wicket
when needed. More than useful with the bat unless the
opposition have someone at extra cover. Great reader of the game
and his knowledge is very useful when he manages to get permission to play of
the wife. Can always be found at Gloucester RFC and
down the “Commie Club”.
top
Craig Baldwin
Right Handed Batsman /
Right Arm Medium Fast Bowler
Nickname: Balders, Rick or Baldrick
Brought up though our feeder club
– Down Hatherley CC - and a permanent member of
the 1st team squad. Good late order batsmen and 1st or 2nd
change bowler as long as he manages to bowl between the white lines on the
wicket. Definitely NOT an opening bowler as he has been dispatched many
times when opening the bowling with the new ball. Known to be “too
helpful” and often finds himself on the end of
the “Spot the Obvious” games. Also,
the founding member of the “gay keep warm/stay cool top” parade.

Rob
Birch
Right Handed Batsman /
Right Arm Medium Bowler
Nickname: Birchy
“Birchy”
is a new addition to the side in 2007.
Good hard hitting, mid-lower order batsman and very useful bowler to
have in the side. Although Birchy may not have completed the funnel in the quickest of
times – he’s managed to produce the best comment during it to do
the thing everybody has been trying to do for years – shut Greener up!!!
Good lad to have about the team and hopefully we will see him get some
important runs and wickets throughout the season.
top
Mark Blewitt
Left Handed Batsman /
Right Arm Medium Bowler
Nickname: Blewey or White Van Man
Mark is a stupid trucker - think
I got that right! Not the brightest spark but is
an underrated batsman and half decent bowler. Found out in a practise
game at the end of the 2006 season that he has possibly been batting wrong
handed as he seemed better right handed. He loves his milk and hates all
food from other countries – often referred to as “foreign sh*t”. Can be found during
the week driving around the country in his white van.
top
Dave Corston
Right Handed Batsman /
Right Arm Medium Swing Bowler
Nickname: Corsty or Inter
One of
the regulars in the Sunday team and a more than useful addition to the Second XI
team, Dave is one of the best swing bowlers in the Club when he gets the ball
to pitch in the right areas, and has the rare ability to ‘swing’
both ways. Through his involvement and captaincy of the Sunday side, Dave
has been a regular member of the Management Committee, is actively involved in
the boys cricket, and is a regular participant when
the Club tours to other parts of the planet.
top
Toby Dudfield
Right Handed Batsman /
Right Arm Medium Bowler
Nickname: Tobes, Dudders or Toblorone
Toby is an
young, enthusiastic cricketer – an excellent addition to the side.
Great fielder – always noisy! Top order batsman and 1st
or 2nd change bowler. Only one problem is that we have to try
and keep him away from Balders and his Haribo. Looking for some good
performances from Toby the next few seasons.
top
Jamie
Edge
Right Handed Batsman /
Right Arm Medium Bowler
Nickname: Edgy
Jamie
burst on to the scene in 2005 when his dad could no longer resist the
temptation of Stowfords at the Club. Not quite
sure how he manages to get his size 12 feet across the cattle grid to the
ground, but he certainly is a talent and one to watch for the future.
James’ great strength is that he listens and learns very quickly, which
has already been rewarded with 2nd XI appearances at the tender age
of 13. He will compete in every aspect of the game whether it be bowling
batting or fielding. He is a captain’s dream and we are very lucky
to have him in the Club.

Ian
Freeman
Right
Handed Batsman/Right Arm “Spin”
Bowler
Nickname: Shinner or Shin Dog
Legend in his own right. “Shinner”
is a great fielder and is capable of hitting the ball a very long
way…… should he ever keep is eyes open! Very
reliable and great for the atmosphere of the team. Wears very loud
shirts and will always be remembered for the amount drink he managed to consume
whilst we were playing in the 2004 regional final of the VKO against Dumbleton – top effort.
top
James Freeman
Right Handed
Batsman/Right Arm Fast Bowler
Nickname: Jammer
On his day, a very quick, hostile
bowler who’s potentially one of the quickest bowlers not just in the
club, but in the whole county. He is a specialist DHCC 6-a-side tournament
captain. Big hitting lower order batsman who has won
many games by hitting a few quick runs at the end of an innings.
Currently plying his trade in USA
but hopefully may come back soon. Another full member
of the “gay top” parade.
top
Ray
Gerken
Left Handed
Batsman/Left Arm Slow Medium Bowler
Nickname: Mondo, Gerks or Coupe de (monde)
Wiley old fox best describes
Ray. Consistent and reliable left arm bowler who
rarely gets hit for more than 3-an-over. Underrated
10/jack batsman. Although his cricket is good – driving is
very poor as Bill Lawrence’s wall and his car insurance company will
testify. Favourite memory of mine regarding Ray was when we travelled all
the way to Trowbridge only to be completely thrashed but the best part of the
day was Ray bowling their very chopsy and arrogant
South African player – Class.
top
Andrew
Green
Right Handed Batsman /
Right Arm Slow Medium Bowler
Nickname:
Greener, Greengrass, Claude
or The Grocer
The Redmarley player every other
cricket club around the county, and outside - love to hate! Greener has
the ability to score a lot more runs – with more concentration – he
can possibly be the Redmarley CC match winner! Useful
wicket taking (lucky) bowler in both league and midweek cup cricket and known
for being rather loud in the field.
top
Mike
Green
Right Handed Batsman /
Right Arm "Part Time" Bowler
Nickname:
Inspector or PC
Nicknamed
so because of his career with the police force, he is often found cordoning off
the changing rooms before the start of the game to check for any unusual
packages. In the 1st XI this would count as
clean and washed cricket whites, and in the 2nd XI this would count
as unusual white substances in the form of anti-inflammatory or pain killing
tablets. Mike is an unsung hero of the Club and of the Sunday XI, who
with his wife Nikki doing the teas, has been the backbone of the Sunday team
for a number of years now. Not a natural run scoring machine, but a
batsman who can certainly hold one end up, but typically will score important
runs to win games for the Sunday side.
top
Ben
Gwilliam
Left Handed Batsman /
Left Arm Fast Bowler
Nickname: Gwill, Gwilly, Benny Boy or Ninja
Very good left arm opening bowler
with the potential to take lots of wickets but also at the same time – be
very economical. Very good middle/lower batsman who started to fulfil his
growing potential in the 2006 season. Very good fielder
with safe hands and also known as the “run out king”.
Unfortunately, he is also very well known for the state and smell of his socks
as Bambi will testify by travelling to Downend with
his socks running along side!
top
Stu Hall
Left Handed Batsman /
Wicketkeeper (& wannabe Bowler)
Nickname: Stuey
or Hally
If
we assume that left handed players should be allowed to play cricket at all,
then you would want Hally to
be in your side. An opening batsman and wicket keeper
of great talent, who is not afraid to take up the challenge against opening
bowlers, which at times can be the daunting prospect of Theo from Hatherley & Reddings.
Another product from our feeder club - Down Hatherley
– Stuey assumed the reins of captaincy in 2005 and steered the Club
through a difficult playing period, but captained one of the best National Village regional final games seen at the
Club with a narrow defeat by Ynystawe in 2005.
His quiet personality is overshadowed at times by his dress sense, as it is not
unusual for Stuey to turn up at the Teddy and then on to Liquid dressed somewhere
between Sonic the Hedgehog and ‘H’ from Steps.
top
Mike Hemmings
Right Handed Batsman /
Wicketkeeper
Nickname: Hemmo
Being Redmarley's
only millionnaire, Mike is an "experienced"
player who has been playing at Redmarley's Playley Green since 1913. If you don't know who Mike
is, he is the guy walking around the ground on a Friday night and in Gloucester on a Saturday
morning asking if any kids or homeless people could play cricket for the 2nds
that day. Good reliable opening batsman and 2nd best wicketkeeper in the
club. Mike does a great job at Redmarley whether it be Secretary,Treasurer or 2nd team
captain. Without Mike the club wouldn't be in the position it is today
and a lot of thanks is due to Mike for everything he does.
top
Jamie Holland
Right Handed Batsman /
Right Arm Medium Bowler
Nickname: Bambi,
Muscles or Eugine
Very economical opening bowler
– always comes from up the hill. Very good technical batting
ability has seen him push his way up the order and started to score some
important runs for the team. Probably (definitely) the
worse swearer in the team as Doug Oakey
would confirm. Has many strops and sulks under the big tree at Playley Green muttering to himself. Very average
fielder – which has actually improved in the last couple of years!
Often seen staggering home on a Saturday night through hedges and gardens
– normally for a fatty… sorry I mean fittie.
top
Dafydd Hughes
Right Handed Batsman
Nickname: Daf, Daffer or Guinness (Downend)
Daffer (and his nads)
are the single reason for the funniest day and night of my entire life spent at
Downend – Rich “Dickie”
Allen will confirm. Probably the most stylish batsman I have played with
or against. Technically brilliant - a great top order batsman who would
probably admit doesn’t score as many runs as his talent deserves.
Good gully fielder although alcohol seems to have started to take its
toll. Despite a record breaking 5 wickets in one over – Daf is most definitely not a bowler. Although Daffer is a great batsman, his driving isn’t up to
much!
top
Andy
Jones
Right Handed Batsman /
Right Arm Spin Bowler
Nickname: ‘Don’, after
the legendary Don King
Don is a
regular in the Sunday side and has been a regular face of the cricket club for
a number of years now. After starting life as a scorer he soon developed
the art of off-spin bowling after deciding that quick singles were not going to
be his fortè. Never shy to say what he thinks,
especially when fielders do not give 110% in the field when the king of spin is
bowling himself.
top
Phil
Jones
Right Handed Batsman
Nickname: Not
really got one so "Joner" will have to do
One of
the elder statesman in the Club who has captained the
Sunday side on more than one occasion and is one of the first players down on
the team sheet for a Sunday. Phil will never let the side down for
turning out on a Saturday either, which typifies his dedication to the Club
that resulted in Phil receiving the Second XI captain’s award in
2006. However, Phil is best known for his exploits around engines, and
the Club is indebted to his skill and expertise for the continued maintenance
of the tractor and mowers.
top
Bill Lawrence
Right Handed Batsman /
Right Arm Slow Medium Bowler
Nickname: Billy
Boy
The Old Pro. Great
asset to the team. Excellent middle or lower
order batsman with a great attitude and knowledge of the game. One
of the old guards of the team and he thinks he should be in the seconds now but
still a more than useful player at 1st team level. Good medium
swing bowler with the knack of getting important wickets and a (relatively)
safe pair of hands. It’s pretty easy to spot Billy –
he’s the one shouting “Good, good, good!”
top
Mark Lawrence
Right Handed Batsman /
Right Arm Medium Bowler
Nickname: Lawro
Very good fielder and more than
useful all rounder. Suffers from a lack of confidence and maybe the odd Friday
night out in Liquid! With more self belief in his cricket Mark can become
a very handy all rounder not just for the second team but for the firsts as
well. A great lad who gives his all and has a good
crack. Can be quite abusive once he finds out if someone
isn’t out in town as and when he is!!!
top
Joe
Lawrence
Right Handed Batsman /
Left Arm Spin Bowler
Nickname: Joey,
Joseph or Tribbiani
Big hair. Believe it or not, Joe is
not 10 – he’s 15 years! He’s an excellent prospect for
the future. Going to be a very good spinner of the ball as long as he
stays as dedicated as he currently is and doesn’t introduce himself to
beer and women! Good character to have around the side and a half decent fielder
as long as he doesn’t run in treacle when chasing the ball. A
regular for the second team and also has experience of 1st team
action. Probably needs to have a full season or so in the seconds to bowl
and bat regularly for cricketing reasons – for fashion/hair style reasons
– he needs to make the step up quickly!
top
Liam
Malone
Right Handed Batsman /
Right Arm Medium Bowler
Nickname: Lee
Liam is
very enthusiastic and extremely dedicated to the game of cricket. He can
always be found in the nets and is already a regular on a Sunday, and has
played a handful of games in the 2nd XI. Liam is not the
tallest or strongest of players but his strength is in his determination to be
best at cricket, and in the end this will turn him into a fine player. As
Lee develops physically, his bowling which is currently the best side of his
game, will improve as he already knows how to bowl line and length which is
heartening as most of our 1st XI team players do not know how
to. Also, as he grows so will his confidence and is certainly a player to
watch for the future.
top
Aaron Moyse
Right Handed Batsman /
Right Arm Swing Bowler
Nickname: Mowgli
Mowgli as
he is affectionately known to his mates is never without a smile on his
face. This is probably because he is as deaf as a door post, and because
he can’t hear properly what people are saying, it’s half the battle
just to smile politely. You never really knew what to expect when Aaron
came to the crease in the Under 15’s, sometimes he was brilliant and on
fire, and other times he looked as if he couldn’t really care and has
never picked up a bat before. However, his smile and enthusiasm is infectious
around the team and he has already made important appearances at the age of 15
for both the Saturday and Sunday sides. His bowling should not be
underestimated either, and providing he continues to develop technically then
there is little reason why Mowgli will not be a regular player at Redmarley for
many years to come.
top
Andy Millward
Right Handed Batsman /
Right Arm Slow Medium Bowler
Nickname: Milly or Milly-Vanilly
A relatively new player than is
originally from the Cornwall
area - a quiet member of the side that gives every effort when he turns out for
either the 1st, 2nd or Sunday XI. A “nudging” middle order batsman and handy slow medium
bowler. Will always be remembered for dropping a hat-trick plus 1
catches in a semi final at Cheltenham although
he managed to catch the hardest one of the lot on the last ball of the
innings! Loves John Smith’s.
top
Paul
Newbery
Left Handed Batsman / Left Arm Spin Bowler
Nickname: Newbes or Nooby Doo
Another excellent new addition for the 2007 season. For the last few seasons the
club has been looking for a high class spinner (Ali doesn’t count –
I said spinner) and Newbes is just that. Although it’s early in his Redmarley
career, he has already taken quite a few wickets and is going to be one of our
match winners, hopefully, for years to come.
Also, more than handy with bat in hand and is a very good acquisition
for the club.
top
Jon Ralph
Right Handed Batsman /
Wicketkeeper
Nickname: Ralphy
or Imran
Ralphy is our overseas
player. He comes from Cardiff
so is not always available for selection. Tends to have trouble hitting
the ball off the square at times although can be a tidy with the bat and a very
good wicketkeeper. Did try and break Milly’s
record of 4 drop catches in one game at Woodmancote
last year but could only manage three (and a truck load of byes!). Enjoys
his cricket and likes a good laugh on and off the field.
top
Toan Ravenscroft
Right Handed Batsman
Nickname: Toe,
Toe Poke or Big Toe
“Big Toe” is his
ironic nickname as he manages to quite spectacularly make a gay, skin tight
stay cool/keep warm top look baggy. Currently working
in London at
the moment which limits his availability but is a very talented top order
batsman. Also a quick, very good fielder
who’s always chirpy and keeps the team going. His bowling is
very ordinary although I’m sure he will argue. Good player to have
in your team.
top
David Reynolds
Right
Handed Batsman / Right Arm Fast Bowler (for 15 years old!)
Nickname:
Reynolds
There is
little doubt that Dave has a great future in front of him with both bat and
ball. His ability and enthusiasm was rewarded in 2006 with a handful of
appearances for the 2nd XI. Even at the tender age of 14 he
was not out of place at a competitive level with either bat or ball, and he is
certainly not afraid of the ball in any position in the outfield. Little
doubt that he is one to watch for the future providing he retains his enthusiasm
and continues to develop his bat and bowling skills.
top
Stewart Robertson
Right Handed Batsman /
Right Arm Spin Bowler
Nickname: Stewey
Never
without a smile on his face Stewey has been an ever present in the Saturday and Sunday side
for a number of years now. He is also known to be hanging around his favourite ‘Shed’ keeping the Club’s
mowers and grass cutting equipment up together and in fine working order.
Over the years Stewey has been known to score vital
runs to set up Saturday and Sunday wins with his ‘immense’ flashing
blade. Not renown for the delicate nudge here
and there, somehow it was all or nothing for Stewart, and more often than not
to the annoyance of our opponents it was usually ‘All’.
top
Andy
Smith
Right Handed Batsman /
Right Arm Medium Bowler
Nickname: Smithy
Andy was
one of the stars in the Under 15’s and undoubtedly has the ability to
become a very fine player. At 16 he has already played for the 1st
and 2nd XI teams, and has he grows and develops physically he will
only get better as a player. However, between the ages of 16-21 are
crucial to the development of a cricketer, and distinguishes between average
players and players of true quality. Smithy’s destiny is in his own
hands, but providing he continues to learn and stays committed to the game,
there is little doubt that he will end up on the quality side of the fence.
top
Luke
Smith
Left Handed Batsman /
Left Arm Medium Fast Bowler
Nickname: Smith,
Guns or Skywalker (The choice is yours)
Technically
Luke is a very gifted batsman who plays with a straight bat and hits the ball
hard. As with most left-handers Luke’s best shot is through extra
cover, but when his timing is on song, there is no better straight driver in
the Club. Whilst Luke is a typical quiet teenager he does his talking
with the bat and providing he can develop a little more confidence and
controlled aggression whilst batting, there is little doubt that he will secure
a 1st XI place in the very near future. Also, there is a lot
of potential with his left arm quick bowling providing he can trade some of his
pace for a little more control at the point of delivery.
top
Mark Stockley
Right Handed Batsman /
Right Arm Slow Bowler
Nickname:
Stockers
Not quite as loud and
"brash" as his boys, but Mark is still as competitive. Very useful top order batsman who has the ability to take wickets
with the ball aswell. Stockers has been
one of the "mainstays" in the 2nd team for the past few seasons as
well as the club in general. Another of the more mature
players in the seconds and a good player for the youngsters to learn from and
listen to.
top
Nick Stockley
Right Handed Batsman /
Right Arm Medium Fast Bowler
Nickname:
Knockers, Stox or Stockers
Stox is the joker of the
team. Always messing around except for when he’s getting spanked
around the park where he then blames the captain’s fielding
positions! Great lad and a very decent cricketer.
Good late order, hard hitting batsman who tends to drop on one knee and smash
over cow corner. Very good opening or 1st
change bowler with good attitude to go with it. Always borrows kit
– technically it’s called stealing cause he very rarely returns
it. Currently living in Leicester which
means appearances are limited. Good fielder but can’t catch a
train, let alone a ball!
top
Tom
Stockley
Left Handed Batsman /
Right Arm Medium Bowler
Nickname: Tommy
or Tommy Gunn
Technically gifted left handed
top order batsman who is a more than useful all rounder. Can often be heard saying
“Rrrrrreeeeeyyyyy” after a batsman has
had the cheek to “play and miss” at one of his deliveries. Very good swing and “in your face” bowler who can be
very difficult to play. Also has his own language –
basically slang English with safe on the end!
top
Dave
Velemir
Right Handed Batsman
Nickname: Velers
"Velers"
has been hampered with injury the last season or so which has seen himself
unavailable for selection but he is a very useful batsman for the 2nd team and
Sunday XI. Good character at the club and does a great job in organising
and ordering the club kit (and trying to get money from players!).
top
Alastair Watkins
Right Handed Batsman /
Right Arm Spin Bowler
Nickname: Stumpy
Top class opening batsman.
High scoring destructive batsman that has taken many bowling attacks apart in
his career. Scorer of lots of hundreds and has won lots of batting and
player of the year awards. He is also a very lucky “pie
chucker” considering he takes a lot of wickets caught on the boundary
courtesy of a nice juicy full toss on leg side. I’ve had to put him
under “spin” bowling – although this term is very loosely
used. A previous club captain and a very good player to
advise any cricketer wanting to improve. Normally fields at slip
as there is no where else to hide him – although he couldn’t catch
a balloon! Very good character to have in the side and never acts his
age! Also, sulks a lot should we cancel the “compulsory item”
for one week.
top
Charlie Williams
Left Handed Batsman /
Left Arm Medium Bowler - All Rounder (and that’s no reference to his physique)
Nickname: Charlie
Charlie
is a home grown player and horticulturist (famed for his tomatoes) who has
lived in the village all of his life. Plagued with a bad back for most of
his playing career, Charlie has been the saviour on
more than one occasion with both bat and ball. Not known for his fashion
sense, or appearances at the annual Dinner/Dance, Charlie will be found getting
to the ground 5 mins before the start of play (if you’re
lucky) and just before Phil Jones. Charlie’s batting and bowling
averages were badly dented in 2006 after he broke bones in his foot, but
I’m sure after a relaxing winter Charlie will be back on the hallowed
turf of Playley Green unable to resist the sound of
bat on ball.
top
Andy
Wilshaw
Right Handed Batsman /
Right Arm Spin Bowler
Nickname: Wilsh
"Wilsh"
was unavailable last season due to injury and work commitments and was sorely
missed. A very good opening or top order batsman who has scored a lot of
runs or Redmarley and also other local clubs. An underrated slow spin
bowler who doesn't really bowl as much as perhaps he could do. Hopefully
the 2007 season will see a return to action for Andy.
